New Jersey Implements Stricter Regulations on the Sale of Stolen Catalytic Converters

New Jersey has recently implemented stricter regulations on the sale of stolen catalytic converters. This move comes as a response to the increasing number of thefts of these devices, which are valuable due to the precious metals they contain.

Catalytic converters are part of a vehicle’s exhaust system and are designed to reduce emissions. They contain precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which make them valuable to scrap metal dealers. Unfortunately, this has led to a rise in thefts of catalytic converters, with thieves targeting vehicles parked in public places such as shopping centers and residential areas.

The new regulations in New Jersey require scrap metal dealers to obtain proof of ownership or authorization from the seller before purchasing a catalytic converter. This means that anyone attempting to sell a catalytic converter must provide documentation showing that they own the vehicle it was removed from or have permission from the owner to sell it.

Additionally, scrap metal dealers must keep records of all catalytic converter purchases, including the name and address of the seller, the make and model of the vehicle the converter was removed from, and the date and price of the sale. These records must be kept for at least two years and made available to law enforcement upon request.

The new regulations also prohibit cash transactions for catalytic converters. Instead, payment must be made by check or electronic transfer, which provides a paper trail that can be traced if necessary.

These regulations are designed to make it more difficult for thieves to sell stolen catalytic converters and to provide law enforcement with the information they need to track down those responsible for thefts. They also help protect vehicle owners from having their catalytic converters stolen and potentially having to pay for expensive repairs.

While these regulations may add some extra steps for those legitimately selling catalytic converters, they are an important step in combating the theft of these valuable devices. By making it more difficult for thieves to sell stolen catalytic converters, we can hopefully reduce the number of thefts and protect both vehicle owners and the environment.
