The Mechanism of Human Smell Receptor Unveiled at Last

For years, scientists have been trying to unravel the mystery of how humans are able to detect and distinguish different smells. Now, a team of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, has finally uncovered the mechanism behind our sense of smell.

The study, published in the journal Nature, reveals that the human olfactory receptor – the protein responsible for detecting odors – works by changing its shape in response to different molecules. This allows it to recognize and respond to a wide range of smells, from the sweet scent of flowers to the pungent aroma of garlic.

To understand how this process works, the researchers used a technique called X-ray crystallography to create detailed images of the olfactory receptor in action.
