Delta Flight 191: The Weather-Induced Crash of a Jumbo Jet

On August 2, 1985, Delta Air Lines Flight 191, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, embarked on a journey that would tragically end in disaster. The flight, en route from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Los Angeles, California, with a scheduled stopover in Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, faced an unforeseen and deadly challenge: a microburst-induced wind shear. This event would become a pivotal moment in aviation history, leading to significant advancements in weather detection and pilot training.

The Fateful Approach

As Flight 191 approached Dallas/Fort Worth, the weather conditions were deteriorating. Thunderstorms were brewing, and the skies were ominously dark. At approximately 6:00 PM, the flight crew was preparing for landing on runway 17L. Unbeknownst to them, a microburst—an intense, localized downdraft—was forming directly in their path.

Microbursts are notorious for their sudden and severe wind changes, posing a significant hazard to aircraft during takeoff and landing. Despite the crew’s experience, the rapidly changing wind conditions caught them off guard. The flight descended into the microburst, causing a drastic loss of altitude and speed.

The Crash

In a desperate attempt to regain control, the crew applied full throttle, but it was too late. The aircraft struck the ground more than a mile short of the runway. It skidded across a highway, hitting two water tanks before breaking apart in a fiery explosion. Of the 163 people on board, 137 lost their lives, including one person on the ground.
