Delta Flight 191: The Impact of Severe Weather on a Jumbo Jet Crash

On August 2, 1985, Delta Flight 191, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar jumbo jet, departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, bound for Los Angeles with a scheduled stopover in Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. What began as a routine flight ended in one of the most tragic and studied aviation disasters in history, highlighting the profound impact of severe weather on air travel.

Approaching Disaster

As Flight 191 approached Dallas/Fort Worth, the crew received reports of thunderstorms in the area. The weather was typical for a Texas summer: hot, humid, and rife with atmospheric instability. However, hidden within these conditions was a deadly meteorological phenomenon known as a microburst, a sudden, powerful downdraft of air that can severely impact aircraft performance during landing and takeoff.
