CleanTechnica Reports: Ford Secures $9.2 Billion DOE Loan to Construct Three Battery Factories in the US.

Ford Motor Company has recently secured a $9.2 billion loan from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to construct three battery factories in the United States. This move is part of Ford’s plan to accelerate its transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The three battery factories will be located in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Michigan, and are expected to create over 11,000 jobs. The factories will produce batteries for Ford’s upcoming electric vehicles, including the F-150 Lightning pickup truck and the E-Transit commercial van.

The loan from the DOE is part of the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) program, which was established in 2008 to support the development of advanced vehicle technologies. The program has provided loans to several automakers, including Tesla, Nissan, and Ford.

The ATVM loan will help Ford to invest in the development of advanced battery technologies, including solid-state batteries, which are expected to offer higher energy density and longer range than current lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries are also safer and more environmentally friendly than traditional batteries, as they do not contain flammable liquid electrolytes.

The construction of the three battery factories is a significant step towards Ford’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The company has already committed to investing $22 billion in EVs and related technologies by 2025, and plans to have 40% of its global vehicle sales be electric by 2030.

The move towards EVs is not only driven by environmental concerns but also by consumer demand. According to a recent survey by Cox Automotive, 70% of US consumers are interested in purchasing an EV for their next vehicle. This trend is expected to continue as EVs become more affordable and accessible.

In addition to the ATVM loan, Ford has also received funding from other sources to support its EV transition. The company recently announced a partnership with South Korean battery maker SK Innovation to build two battery factories in the United States, and has also received funding from the Canadian government to build a new EV factory in Ontario.

Overall, Ford’s investment in battery factories and advanced battery technologies is a significant step towards achieving its goal of carbon neutrality and meeting the growing demand for EVs. The move is also expected to create thousands of jobs and support the development of a more sustainable transportation system.
