“Capitol Connection Update: Autism Society Highlights for May 30, 2024”

**Capitol Connection Update: Autism Society Highlights for May 30, 2024**

As the month of May comes to a close, the Autism Society of America continues its mission to create a more inclusive and equitable world for individuals with autism and their families. This week’s Capitol Connection Update highlights key legislative developments, advocacy efforts, and community initiatives that are shaping the future for the autism community. Here’s a detailed look at the latest updates as of May 30, 2024.

### **1. Federal Advocacy: Progress on the Autism CARES Act Reauthorization**
One of the most significant updates this week is the progress on the reauthorization of the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support (CARES) Act. Originally passed in 2006 and reauthorized in 2014 and 2019, the Autism CARES Act provides critical funding for autism research, services, and training programs.

The Autism Society has been actively working with lawmakers to ensure the 2024 reauthorization includes increased funding for lifespan services, particularly for adults with autism who often face gaps in support as they age out of school-based programs. Advocacy efforts have focused on expanding access to employment training, housing assistance, and mental health services.

This week, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing to discuss the proposed updates to the Autism CARES Act. The Autism Society submitted written testimony emphasizing the importance of addressing disparities in access to care for underserved communities, including rural areas and communities of color. The bill is expected to move forward with bipartisan support.

### **2. Medicaid Expansion for Autism Services**
Another major highlight is the ongoing push for Medicaid expansion to cover more autism-related services. The Autism Society has been advocating for states to adopt policies that ensure Medicaid covers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other evidence-based interventions.

This week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced new guidance encouraging states to streamline the approval process for autism services under Medicaid waivers. The Autism Society applauded this move, noting that it will reduce wait times and improve access to care for thousands of families. Advocates are urging state governments to act quickly to implement these changes.

### **3. Employment Initiatives: National Autism Workforce Development Program**
Employment remains a critical issue for the autism community, with unemployment and underemployment rates for individuals with autism significantly higher than the general population. In response, the Autism Society has partnered with the Department of Labor to launch the National Autism Workforce Development Program, which aims to create more inclusive workplaces and provide job training for individuals on the spectrum.

This week, the program announced a new pilot initiative in five states—California, Texas, Ohio, New York, and Florida. The initiative will connect employers with resources to support neurodiverse hiring practices and provide mentorship opportunities for individuals with autism. The Autism Society is also advocating for additional federal funding to expand the
