Assessing the Cost-Effectiveness of Adding Hyaluronic Acid to Platelet-Rich Plasma for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Study by Regenexx

Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has emerged as a promising treatment option for knee osteoarthritis, with studies showing that it can help reduce pain and improve function in some patients. However, the addition of hyaluronic acid to PRP has been suggested to enhance its effectiveness even further.

A recent study conducted by Regenexx, a leading provider of regenerative medicine treatments, sought to assess the cost-effectiveness of adding hyaluronic acid to PRP for knee osteoarthritis. The study involved a total of 100 patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis who were randomly assigned to receive either PRP alone or PRP with hyaluronic acid.

The results of the study showed that patients who received PRP with hyaluronic acid experienced greater improvements in pain, function, and quality of life compared to those who received PRP alone. In addition, the cost-effectiveness analysis revealed that the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for adding hyaluronic acid to PRP was within an acceptable range, indicating that the combination therapy was a cost-effective option for treating knee osteoarthritis.

These findings have important implications for healthcare providers and patients considering PRP therapy for knee osteoarthritis. By adding hyaluronic acid to PRP, providers may be able to achieve better outcomes for their patients at a reasonable cost. This could potentially lead to improved patient satisfaction and reduced healthcare costs in the long run.

It is important to note that while this study provides valuable insights into the cost-effectiveness of combining hyaluronic acid with PRP for knee osteoarthritis, further research is needed to confirm these findings and determine the optimal treatment approach for individual patients. In the meantime, patients with knee osteoarthritis should consult with their healthcare providers to discuss the potential benefits and risks of PRP therapy, including the option of adding hyaluronic acid for enhanced effectiveness.
