To shed light on this evolving landscape, we sat down with Phil Butehorn and James Ferguson, the creative minds behind Slice(s) of Life – ComixLaunch, a successful comic book project that was funded through Kickstarter.

Slice(s) of Life – ComixLaunch is a comic anthology that explores the theme of pizza from various perspectives. With a team of talented writers and artists, Butehorn and Ferguson set out to create a collection of stories that not only entertain but also celebrate the universal love for pizza. The project gained traction on Kickstarter, where it surpassed its funding goal and garnered support from comic enthusiasts worldwide.

One of the key topics we discussed with Butehorn and Ferguson was the role of crowdfunding in the comic book industry. Traditionally, comic creators relied on publishers to finance their projects, but crowdfunding has opened up new possibilities. Butehorn explained, “Crowdfunding allows us to connect directly with our audience and gauge their interest in our project. It also gives us creative control over our work, which is something many creators value.”

Ferguson added, “Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter provide a level playing field for creators. It allows us to showcase our ideas and build a community around our work. It’s empowering to see people supporting projects they believe in.”

However, running a successful crowdfunding campaign is no easy feat. Butehorn and Ferguson emphasized the importance of careful planning and preparation. “You need to have a solid concept and a clear vision for your project,” Butehorn advised. “It’s crucial to communicate your ideas effectively through your campaign page and promotional materials.”

Ferguson chimed in, “Engaging with your audience is key. Regular updates, social media presence, and interacting with backers are all essential to maintaining momentum throughout the campaign.”

When asked about the challenges they faced during their campaign, Butehorn and Ferguson highlighted the need for flexibility and adaptability. “You have to be prepared for unexpected obstacles,” Butehorn said. “Whether it’s production delays or unforeseen expenses, having contingency plans in place is crucial.”

Ferguson added, “It’s also important to manage expectations. Crowdfunding can be unpredictable, and not every project will reach its funding goal. However, even if you don’t meet your target, you can still learn valuable lessons and build a supportive community for future endeavors.”

Beyond crowdfunding, we delved into the creative process behind Slice(s) of Life – ComixLaunch. Butehorn and Ferguson emphasized the collaborative nature of the project. “Working with a team of talented writers and artists brings diverse perspectives to the table,” Butehorn explained. “It enriches the storytelling and allows us to explore different art styles and narrative approaches.”

Ferguson added, “We wanted to create a comic anthology that appeals to a wide range of readers. Pizza is a universally loved food, so we thought it would be a fun theme to explore. Each story in the anthology offers a unique take on pizza, from humorous to heartfelt.”

As our conversation drew to a close, Butehorn and Ferguson shared their advice for aspiring comic creators. “Don’t be afraid to take risks and pursue your passion,” Butehorn encouraged. “Crowdfunding provides an opportunity to bring your ideas to life, so seize it.”

Ferguson concluded, “Building a supportive network is crucial. Connect with other creators, attend conventions, and engage with your audience. The comic book community is incredibly welcoming, and there’s always room for new voices.”

Slice(s) of Life – ComixLaunch serves as a testament to the power of crowdfunding in the comic book industry. It showcases the potential for creators to bring their visions to life while building a dedicated community of supporters. With their successful campaign, Butehorn and Ferguson have proven that comics, crowdfunding, and pizza make for a winning combination.
